WebSite History

This page contains both the past and ongoing history of the "Marine Engineering" website. Here you will find information regarding the programs, most of which where freeware, links are included to the download site where known.

Go to the History table at the foot of this page to see what's new since you last visited.

How this website was created

Most of the MEK (Marine Engineering Knowledge) pages where created some time back as handouts when I was involved with the training of cadets.

The pages where converted to HTML initially using MS Notepad, hard coding all the Tags. More recently I have been using the excellent 'free for non-commercial use' HTML editor Evrsoft 1stPage2000. I really can't recommend this enough although it is sometimes a little unstable.

If you are new to website creation I would recommend the book "HTML4-HowTo" it costs about £14 from an old stock bookshop. It looks a little daunting due to its size but it is really well written. In addition you can see the complete HTML4 specifications form the Web consortium which contains information on all the tags and styles available. Its a real must, especially as its available for download as a zip file

To create the homepage required some careful positioning which I had tried by coding only. However with the availability of the "free for non-commercial use " Web!Personnel edition, I used this WYSIWYG editor. Its a little heavy handed with its coding but excellent for starting out.

Graphics

A lot of the graphics were created a while back using GST Designworks v2, more recently I have been using MS Paint.

Graphics where converted to gif format using the excellent freeware IrfranView which is capable of converting between just about anything to anything.

The graphics where then optimised using Advanced Gif Optimizer, version 1 of which was given away free. Optimising reduces the gif size by huge amounts and makes a big difference to download times.

In addition photo enhancement was done using ArcSoft Photostudio, version 2E of which was distributed free for personal use.

Connecting to the web can open your computer to attack. A software firewall can give you a degree of security, you can go to the Zone labswebsite, and download an excellent light version free for personal use.

A good source of free software is the website for .net magazine which is where the majority of my software originated.

01-11-03First 30000 hit week, I kid you not and includes 12000 hits in one day. I can only put down this recent rise to increase weighting in Google as the weighting in altavista has dropped off since they went to pay per rank.
07-11-03Purifier page completed. Sprinkler & torsionmeter pages added. Stories, Water fire fighting, pumps, feed tank pages updated. Now over 230 Marine Engineering pages and 770 drawings.
16-11-03Site hits now settled down in the 20-25000 per week and about 250 unique visitors per day. Considering not so long ago I had set a 1000 hit per week limit when I was going to shut to site down. I have to thank Tony Moran for his assistance with this site and must apologise to everyone for delays in replying. Especially those after the MEA program, this mainly due to testing installations as being a single programmer the code is in a continuous state of flux. The latest version is now numbered 1.4.xxx not due to massive code rewrite but to reflect the base database version which has to be upgrade to allow new features. All databases can be read by all versions and updateing older databases is automatically carried out by newer versions of the program. New entry on the stories page - this is read by over 100 people per week but none of you have anything interesting ever happerned to you - now come on!!!!!
P.S. the one about the bird was not me but a work colleague of mine so no complaints please
